Hi guys.
So, Im starting this group because as time goes on I have become to feel more and more isolated while working in the studio. I used to love sitting in the glass classroom and just working on something for hours as classes started and ended, meals were eaten, ciggs smoked on the roof, beer consumed in crit rooms, conversations and interactions. I miss the interaction and discussion. Everyone here is musicians, I dont know how to talk about music, and they dont know how to talk about art. I have been lucky enough to meet mentors, and I think it is very important to have a community of people who are interested in what you are interested in.
Heres what were going to do. Start posting articles and reading them, and discussing them. The internet allows us to highlight and google names in the articles and look up their work and become enlightened by new artists and thoughts about ways of working. Im excited hope you are too. invite anyone else you want.
first article is:

e
great article. street art is definitely the new 'hip art.'
ReplyDeleteits all over the place.
during my first year of art school, i had a whole list of art projects that i was gonna put ALL OVER the city. i started 2 projects with a friend, but damn, there just wasn't enough time or motivation to finish them.
urban art is the one type of art that doesn't attract any particular type of audience. it is seen by a demographic... by people that are just passing through on their way to the grocery store, or back from work...its a totally different type of art, with a totally different audience.
there was a guy that drew a bunch of little white robots all over richmond...people noticed it, he was discovered, he had his first show as a result, and everything in the gallery was SOLD on opening night. im not sure where i was going with that...
oh yeah, there is potentially a huge amount of money in it.. and the networking involved is different than any other form of art. make something witty, make people look at it, and someone is bound to pay for it. especially if it causes a ruckus.
so elaine, how do i post another article for review??
:o)
I think that what draws me to street art, or art in unexpected places, is the same thing that draws me to design in general. Its the same old stuff, the same places, dishes, clothing etc. but with something extra. Elements that make you glad that it is there that are unexpected bits of flare. I think that this flare is what makes everyday life more exciting, its the icing on the cake or the sugar in the coffee, or any other idiom. I think that its hugely important to put energy into both finding ways to make public statements, and finding public statements that have already been made. Weather or not financial gain is the goal. Like check out my image of FREE SNOW I saw it as I was driving home from the dentist. And its so simple yet clever, I had to pull over and take a picture of it. Ha, it totally made my day. I love stuff like that. The trick is, how do I become more cleaver?
ReplyDeleteOlivia, I have no idea how you can post an article. Thanks for wanting to though. Maybe send it to me, and Ill post it.
